Scholar FAQ

Where is the Scholar Channel available?
Current cable companies that carry AETN Scholar:
    • Comcast Cable (Little Rock, North Little Rock, Jacksonville, Bryant, Alexander, Cammack Village, Sherwood)
    • Time Warner Cable (Earle, Marion, West Memphis, and Kennett, MO)
    • Conway Corp. (Conway)
    • Wehco (Resort Cable/Hot Springs, Pine Bluff Cable TV/Pine Bluff)

We Don’t Have Digital Cable Service. How can we get Scholar programs?
You can call your local cable company to see if they carry AETN Scholar or will be adding it in the future.

I want to incorporate specific segments of these series in my lesson plans, and I don't want to use the entire series. Am I allowed to do that?
Yes. Many of the programs we air are part of a series. You can use any of the programs without showing the whole series.

Can I get these programs videostreamed?
Currently, the only videostreamed programming AETN Scholar offers is Annenberg Media programs.

Do the Scholar programs have lesson plans and other materials?
AETN does not normally provide supplemental materials for programs other than its own productions. Additional resources for the Annenberg programs may be obtained from their Web site at www.learner.org. For information on programs other than Annenberg, you can Contact Us. We can give you the contact information for the individual vendors.

How long are the rights to programs on Scholar? I don't want to build them into my lesson plan if I can't use them next year.
Many of the programs on Scholar are leased on a yearly basis. AETN decides whether to renew rights to a series based on feedback from educators. Every effort is made to lease quality programming that will not need to be replaced in a short time period. The best way to be sure we keep a series is to Contact Us to let us know what programs you like to use.

We are having a big push about things being "research based." Do these programs fall into that category?
AETN makes every effort to ensure the most appropriate services and resources are available for Arkansas educators. Using research based programming is part of that effort. The ANNENBERG series, in particular, is research based. If you have a question, check the individual program's Web site for more specific information.

We've had problems with accessing videostreamed programs because they slow the school's systems to a crawl. Some schools have blocked all streamed video. Will there be the same problems with these programs?
This should not be a problem if the program is recorded from the AETN Scholar Channel or the AETN overnight blockfeed for schools. Just record, and use them when you need them. At some schools, the library media specialist or librarian does all the recordings for teachers. At others, teachers make their own recordings, sometimes from home.

I read that Annenberg has stopped broadcasting its series - we must get the programs from their videostreamed materials. Is that correct?
Annenberg has indeed closed its broadcast department and will not be broadcasting from their facilities. AETN has made special arrangements with Annenberg to continue broadcasting those series as usual.

There is a series I would like to use in my classroom, but I've never seen it on AETN. Is there any way I can request it?
Yes. We would love to hear from you. You can send a question, comment, or request to education@aetn.org, and use Scholar on the subject line. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to secure the series, but we will make every effort to meet the needs of Arkansas teachers.

I keep hearing about the Scholar Channel and the overnight blockfeed? What's the difference?
The AETN Scholar Channel is one of four digital channnels AETN offers over the air. Anyone close enough to one of our digital transmitters and has a digital tuner on their television can pick it up over the air. The education overnight blockfeed is a service that AETN has offered for years. From midnight to 5 A.M., Tuesday through Saturday, we broadcast programs specifically for educators. Since digital television is still new, we understand that not everyone has access to our digital services. The overnight blockfeed is aired on our main AETN channel, virtually accessable throughout the entire state.
